I don’t want you to get me wrong, table salt has a lot of benefits it does to our body – from supplying electrolyte sodium to maintaining fluid balance within your cells.

How Much Salt Is Good For The Body?
Up to 1,500 milligrams of Sodium is needed by our body each day.



This can be supplied by the amount contained in 3,800 milligrams of salt, according to the Linus Pauling Institute.
But many people consume more than this amount each day without noting the adverse effects it has on their body system. So what are these side effects?


Swelling In Parts Of The Body
Sometimes you wake up to see your eyes puffy or swollen. This may be due to water retention around your eyes caused by too much Sodium in your body cells. The amount of sodium in the extracellular fluid helps to determine the amount of water your body retains.

If you have too much salt in the body, the Kidney would normally reduce the amount of water passed out through urine in order to balance the salt level in the body. The effect you see is swellings in parts of your body, like the eye example given above, hands and feet.
The skin around the eyes are so thin, so the effect is pronounced there. This effect may also vary with age.
Dehydration Of The Body?

This can be very obvious when you start getting thirsty frequently. You may be wondering how this could possibly happen when I just said that too much salt retains water in the body. Yes, water retention happens when you consume enough water. What happens when you don’t? Salt in your body needs water to balance it out, but when you don’t have enough without water in your diet, your body may pull water from within your cells.

At this point, you would normally start seeing symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, stomach cramps and thirst.
Too Much Salt Causes High Blood Pressure!
As explained above, too much Sodium and chloride in the body can make the body retain more water than necessary. The extra fluids that build up in body tissues in turn increases volume of the blood. The increased volume of the blood causes it to push against blood vessel walls — and the result is high blood pressure, or what we call hypertension.

Since symptoms of high blood pressure are not usually very obvious at the initial stages, damages to blood vessels, as well as the heart and kidneys would have happened. The most common noticeable effects of high blood pressure are usually stroke or heart attack.

Like it was pointed out in the first paragraph of this article, cooking salt or table salt has a lot benefits in the body but this should not exceed the recommended daily intake.

It can have harmful effects on metabolism and contribute to all sorts of diseases.

Here are (7) disturbing reasons why you should avoid added sugar like the plague.

1. Added Sugar Contains No Essential Nutrients and is Bad For Your Teeth
You’ve probably heard this a million times before… but it’s worth repeating. Added sugars (like sucrose and high fructose corn syrup) contain a whole bunch of calories with NO essential nutrients. For this reason, they are called “empty” calories.

There are no proteins, essential fats, vitamins or minerals in sugar… just pure energy. When people eat up to 10-20% of calories as sugar (or more), this can become a major problem and contribute to nutrient deficiencies.
Sugar is also very bad for the teeth, because it provides easily digestible energy for the bad bacteria in the mouth (1 ).

Bottom Line: Sugar contains a lot of calories, with no essential nutrients. It also causes tooth decay by feeding the harmful bacteria in the mouth.

2. Added Sugar is High in Fructose, Which Can Overload Your Liver
In order to understand what is so bad about sugar, then you need to understand what it is made of. Before sugar enters the bloodstream from the digestive tract, it is broken down into two simple sugars… glucose and fructose. Glucose is found in every living cell on the planet. If we don’t get it from the diet, our bodies produce it. Fructose is different. Our bodies do not produce it in any significant amount and there is no physiological need for it. The thing with fructose is that it can only be metabolized by the liver in any significant amounts. This is not a problem if we eat a little bit (such as from fruit) or we just finished an exercise session. In this case, the fructose will be turned into glycogen and stored in the liver until we need it ( 3 ).

However, if the liver is full of glycogen (much more common), eating a lot of fructose overloads the liver, forcing it to turn the fructose into fat (4 ). When repeatedly eating large amounts of sugar, this process can lead to fatty liver and all sorts of serious problems ( 5 ). Keep in mind that all of this does NOT apply to fruit. It is almost impossible to overeat fructose by eating fruit. There is also massive individual variability here. People who are healthy and active can tolerate more sugar than people who are inactive and eat a Western, high-carb, high-calorie diet.

Bottom Line: For people who are inactive and eat a Western diet, large amounts of fructose from added sugars get turned into fat in the liver.

3. Overloading The Liver With Fructose Can Cause Non- Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.
When fructose get turned into fat in the liver, it is shipped out as VLDL cholesterol particles. However, not all of the fat gets out, some of it can lodge in the liver.

This can lead to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), a growing problem in Western countries that is strongly associated with metabolic diseases (6 ). Studies show that individuals with fatty liver consume up to 2-3 times as much fructose as the average person (7 , 8 ).

Bottom Line: Excess fructose gets turned into fat, which can lodge in the liver and cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

4. Sugar Can Cause Insulin Resistance, a Stepping Stone Towards Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes
Insulin is a very important hormone in the body. It allows glucose (blood sugar) to enter cells from the bloodstream and tells the cells to start burning glucose instead of fat.

Having too much glucose in the blood is highly toxic and one of the reasons for complications of diabetes, like blindness. One feature of the metabolic dysfunction that is caused by the Western diet, is that insulin stops working as it should. The cells become “resistant” to it. This is also known as insulin resistance , which is believed to be a leading driver of many diseases… including metabolic syndrome, obesity, cardiovascular disease and especi

When people talk about the calories in food, what do they mean?

A calorie is a unit of measurement — but it doesn't measure weight or length. A calorie is a unit of energy. When you hear something contains 100 calories, it's a way of describing how much energy your body could get from eating or drinking it.

How often do you pay attention to the number of calories that are in the food you eat?

Are Calories Bad for You? Calories aren't bad for you. Your body needs calories for energy. But eating too many calories — and not burning enough of them off through activity — can lead to weight gain.

Most foods and drinks contain calories. Some foods, such as lettuce, contain few calories (1 cup of shredded lettuce has less than 10 calories). Other foods, like peanuts, contain a lot of calories (½ cup of peanuts has 427 calories).

You can find out how many calories are in a food by looking at the nutrition facts label.
The label also will describe the components of the food — how many grams of carbohydrate, protein, and fat it contains.

Here's how many calories are in 1 gram of each:
carbohydrate — 4 calories
protein — 4 calories
fat — 9 calories


That means if you know how many grams of each one are in a food, you can calculate the total calories. You would multiply the number of grams by the number of calories in a gram of that food component.
For example, if a serving of potato chips (about 20 chips) has 10 grams of fat, 90 calories are from fat. That's 10 grams x 9 calories per gram.

Eating right before bed is a recipe for gaining weight and sleeping poorly, but it can also seriously damage the tissue in your throat and esophagus.

No doubt you’re familiar with acid reflux—which occurs when digestive juices back up into the chest or throat and cause a burning sensation—but there’s also something called “silent reflux,” which is different from common heartburn. It has the same causes but without the usual symptoms.
Instead of indigestion, sufferers get sore throats, chronic coughs, and difficulty swallowing.

Nearly 50 percent of Americans have silent reflux and don’t know it, says aryngologist Jamie Koufman, M.D., who has been studying and treating the condition for about 30 years.
“The single greatest risk factor is, by far, the time that people eat dinner,” says Koufman. She recommends having supper no later than three hours before bed. But even if you manage to do that, be aware that late-night snacking can have the same ruinous effect.
If you are going to hit the fridge or pantry before you hit the sack,



here are seven things you should never, ever grab.

Alcohol

It relaxes the valves that connect the stomach and esophagus. When this happens, your body is unable to keep food where it belongs. “If you have alcohol just before bed, you’re pretty much asking to have reflux,” says Koufman.

Soda

It doesn't get much more acidic than soda. In fact, soda is actually more acidic than anything found in nature, says Koufman. The acid damages those same valves. Plus, carbonation increases stomach pressure.

Chocolate

Certain flavors are high in fat—which comforts and relaxes the valves, too—and it contains caffeine and a lesser-known stimulant called theobromine, essentially making it a triple whammy.

Cheese

It's another fatty food, but if you must indulge, hard varieties such as Parmesan and Swiss have less of a reflux effect than softer types such as feta and mozzarella. (Yes, that means no pizza.)

Nuts

When it comes to reflux, fat is fat, whether saturated or unsaturated. So despite the fact that nuts generally contain a healthy dose of the latter, they should be avoided before bed. Cashews, walnuts, macadamias and peanuts are the worst, says Koufman, while pistachios and almonds aren’t quite so bad.

Citrus

It’s also highly acidic. A glass of orange juice or a green apple are your worst choices, but some people can eat red apples without problems—it depends on the person.

Coffee

Not only is it inherently acidic, but the caffeine it contains also generates additional stomach acid. If you must sip, decaf generally has lower acid levels than regular. So what options are left when the midnight munchies strike? Koufman suggests anything that’s low in acid, such as bananas, a bowl of low-sugar cereal with low-fat milk or, her favorite, chamomile tea. “It’s soothing,” she says. “It sort of fills you up and settles the stomach.”

Do you often begin your day with a glass of fresh fruit juice or worse, a canned juice? This could be very damaging for your health and weight loss plan. Fruit juice, which is considered healthy by most people is almost as bad as soft drinks.

Let’s find out why. The reason fruit juices are such culprits is because they contain very less fibre and more sugar which do more harm than good. Susan Jebb, head of diet and obesity research at the Medical Research Council’s Human Nutrition Research unit in Cambridge, says she did not see juice as a healthy option.

‘Fruit juice isn’t the same as intact fruit and it has got as much sugar as many classical sugar drinks. It is also absorbed very fast so by the time it gets to your stomach your body doesn’t know whether it’s Coca-Cola or orange juice, frankly,’ she told Sunday Times. ‘I have to say it is a relatively easy thing to give up. Swap it and have a piece of real fruit. If you are going to drink it, you should dilute it,’ she said.

Popkin, a professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina, told the Guardian that fruit juices and fruit smoothies were ‘the new danger’. ‘Think of eating one orange or two and getting filled. Now think of drinking a smoothie with six oranges and two hours later it does not affect how much you eat. The entire literature shows that we feel full from drinking beverages like smoothies but it does not affect our overall food intake, whereas eating an orange does,’ he said.

‘So pulped-up smoothies do nothing good for us but do give us the same amount of sugar as four to six oranges or a large coke. It is deceiving,’ Popkin said.

According to leading lifestyle and obesity consultant Naini Setalvad , ‘Whether fresh or packaged, juice is not something one should be drinking. A 250 ml glass would be equal to having 10 spoons of sugar even when no sugar has been added giving a very high sugar rush which can cause burst of energy which will drop immediately causing fatigue , lethargy and irritability.

There is absolutely no fibre so doesn’t keep you full. A 250 ml glass of orange juice would have at least 5-6 oranges. If you eat 5-6 oranges you would be full, but if you have a glass of orange juice you would yet want to eat more. So it’s better to eat the fruit than drink the juice.’ Besides juice, here are some more sugary products you should avoid for your health’s sake.

Salads: Many salads are packed with high- calorie ingredients, such as cheese, bacon bits, nuts, avocado and creamy dressings. They also consist of oil, butter, mayonnaise and other
Fat-laden sauces. Try these low-fat salad dressings.

Energy bars: Just because they come in fancy packaging with health claims doesn’t mean they are healthy. Many are full of white flour, sugar and some can be high in saturated fat and contain little to no fibre. 

Smoothies: The main ingredient is fruit juice, which lacks fibre found in the fruit itself. Most smoothie places use frozen yoghurt as a base and then add additional sugar. Grab an apple, a pear, a handful of grapes or a banana instead. Which is healthier – fruits of fruit juice?

Breakfast cereals: Some cereals are healthier than others. Choosing the wrong box might be equivalent to eating dessert as some cereals are high in sugar and fat. The main ones to watch out for are your sugar-coated or ‘frosted’ kids’ ones, along with some of the nutty ones.

Artificial sweeteners: Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame should be strictly avoided. Not only are they nasty chemical substances, but they have also been connected to obesity and diabetes. Read more about Stevia, a natural sweetener.

Energy drinks: You can’t miss the big buzz of energy drinks flooding our grocery store shelves, shining aloud with their lurid logos and ever-so-fancy names. But just one can has nearly 10 teaspoons of sugar. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the recommended sugar intake per day for women and men are 5 and 9 teaspoons respectively. Have a can of energy drink and you are already past your limit.

Frozen foods: The health properties of frozen foods like parathas, fries, meats, and desserts are questionable. This is because their ingredients will not be the same as freshly- made meals. A major concern is the use of partially hydrogenated palm oil which might have hidden, dangerous trans fats. Secondly, the sodium content is also an issue. Many frozen meals contain between 700 to 1800 mg of sodium. With the daily recommended maximum dosage of 2300 mg of sodium, it is hard to stay in this limit! This puts people with high blood pressure at further risk.

Flavoured yoghurt: It comes in a variety of mouth-watering flavours, often contains no fruit in it but sugar with artificial fruit flavours. A lot of these contain the pureed fruit with lots of sugar in it which gets stored as fat. These are marketed as healthy/fat-free products, but they still are a hidden source of high-calorie food. Flavoured foods also have high sodium content. Choose plain yogurt and add fresh fruit as a topping instead.

Ketchup: The process of making tomato ketchup is taking tomatoes and cooking them down, straining the seeds and skin and then cooking again for several hours on high heat which eliminates all the good vitamins and minerals that tomatoes actually contain. The sugar and sodium content in them is extremely
high. It also has corn syrup which is linked with increasing rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
